The Benefits of Yoga

You don’t have to be incredibly flexible or attend a studio every week to notice the mental and physical benefits of yoga. Practicing a few minutes of yoga every day does more than improve your flexibility. Regardless of age, anyone can experience the immeasurable benefits of yoga. Even one to two practices a week can enhance the quality of your life. Of course, the more frequently you practice yoga, the more benefits you will see. 

As you age, your vertebra begins to stiffen and weaken. This can cause an increase strain on your joints and muscles. The gentle stretching and breathing from yoga helps to realign your spine, which recovers balance and posture.

 

There are numerous health problems associated with poor blood circulation. You can increase your blood flow with a few moments of daily yoga. With regular practice, your blood circulation will improve, which helps other organs of the body function properly. The increase of blood flow and improvement of breath boosts your immune system and overall health.

 

Everyone feels gassy from time to time because of acid reflux, eating excessively or other health reasons. Digestive problems can make you feel tired and irritated for hours. You can do a few minutes of yoga to ease stomach complication. Certain stretches focus on the abdominal organs, which can relieve digestive issues like bloating and constipation. 

 

Yoga has also been found to strengthen bones and increase muscle strength overtime. Some people disagree because there are no weights involved in yoga. However, when practicing yoga, you are holding your own body up with your muscles. Although lifting weights is the best solution to gaining muscle mass, you can still notice results with consistent yoga practice.

 

Mentally, yoga has been known to improve memory, concentration and reduce depression. It gets harder to remember and concentrate the older we get. Relaxation helps to slow down the mind, which enables you to think clearly and stay on task. You will gradually learn to set aside negative thoughts and embrace inner peace the longer you practice yoga.

 

People who deal with the painful symptoms of anxiety and depression can find relief by practicing yoga. Breathing exercises can help slow down your thoughts and relax into a deep rest. Concentrating on your natural breath also allows you to be in the present moment and experience actual bliss. Many cancer patients and people who suffer from insomnia have also found sanctuary on the yoga mat. 

 

There are a variety of techniques that involve deep breathing, meditation and holding yoga positions. Of course, certain practices of yoga involve strength and flexibility, while some techniques simply encourage self-awareness. Yoga is a powerful tool and is not a “one size fits all” activity. Everyone can find a technique that will benefit their wellness and health.

5 Steps to a Positive Self Image

 

The way you perceive yourself is created throughout your life by events and circumstances. For example, after I’m finished writing this post I will feel quite impressed with myself. On the other hand, I skipped my workout 3 times in one week, which fills me with disappointment. 

Having one bad thought to lead to another negative thought and you will be caught in a paralyzing spider web. Unfortunately, the world can be a vicious place. I’ve had criticism thrown at me from every direction once or twice in my life and it can break you down. But we are women and we are strong so here are a few tips that I hope stay with you.

 

1.
Write a list of the things you like about yourself. Every time you think of something you like besides your physical appearance (weight, height or hair color), remind yourself that beauty is more than skin deep. There’s nothing more sexier than a woman with a strong sense of self acceptance, openness and confidence. 

 

2.
Surround yourself with positive people. it is easier to feel good about yourself and your body when you are around others who are supportive and who recognize the importance of self acceptance. If you hang out with “friends” who are constantly tearing you down, they are clearly not worth your time.

 

3.
Treat yourself to something you enjoy to let your body know how much you love it. Relax outside on a sunny day, write a poem, or take a hot bubble bath. This will allow yourself some “me time”. Do things that you enjoy and are good at. You may discover something about yourself or even a hidden talent, which will take your confidence to another level!

 

4.
Stop comparing yourself to others. We all look at Instagram models and celebrities on tv and feel a little self conscious. But these beautiful bodies weren’t born that way. 2 cups white sugar

Can I Still Workout If I Have A Common Cold?

 

It’s no secret that maintaining your health both physically and mentally can help your body fight off viruses. You can strengthen your immune system every day by including a proper diet and regular physical activity in your routine. However, the common cold can still affect anyone.

 

So, can you still workout while you are feeling under the weather? Depending on your symptoms, you can still perform low impact and low intensity exercises. Yoga and stretching are very low impact and can improve your blood circulation after you have been laying in bed for hours.

 

If you are sneezing and have a runny nose, it’s most likely safe for you to workout at a low to moderate level. But, if you are experiencing fever, vomiting or diahrea, stay in bed and out of the gym until the infection has left your body. Either way, you need proper rest to heal quickly and fight the sickness. 

 

Although working out helps strengthen your immune system, it doesn’t heal you any faster after you have already become sick. There are remedies to help speed up your recovery time, but you can’t expect to reduce your symptoms by exercising. Since you are not at 100% when you have a cold, remember to never over exhaust yourself.

 

Take into consideration that certain cold medicines can increase the heart rate. A combination of these medications and exercise can cause you to have a shortness of breath and a skyrocketing heart rate. If you become lightheaded, dizzy or off balance during your exercise, stop immediately and call your physician.

You switched to a low carb diet, do cardio and you’re still not losing weight. Many people falsely believe that the most efficient way to lose weight is by eating less. It’s true, if you eat too many calories you can gain weight. However, the body needs a minimum amount of calories and nutrients for the body’s organs to function properly. 

 

If you don’t absorb proper nutrients and vitamins, the body tries to replace the lack of nutrients by physically breaking down tissues, such as muscles. Not only are muscles harder to gain than they are to lose, but this also decreases your metabolism.

 

When you put your body on a low calorie diet, it stores the nutrients as fat in order to keep you breathing. The slower your metabolism works, the harder weight loss will be. There are painful symptoms that are associated with nutritional deficiency, which include fatigue, weaken circulatory system and depression. 

 

The lowest amount of calories a woman should consume when trying to lose weight depends on her basal metabolic rate. Your BMR is the amount of energy your body burns while it’s completely at reset and not engaging in any physical activity. This is basically the minimum amount of calories your body would need in a comatose state. There are many factors associated with this number such as your level of physical activity, gender, age, height and weight. 

 

Just because some foods are low carb, doesn’t mean that you should over induldge. Even desserts and breads that are organic and low carb can stop you from seeing results if you eat too many. Fruits can also be sneaky at making you gain weight. Although they are low in calories, they contain a lot of sugar.

 

 As the saying goes, “Too much of a good thing is a bad thing”. What is Meditation?


The purpose of meditation is to calm and quiet your mind and achieve a state of mental awareness. In other words, to be in the moment. The average person has thousands of thoughts running through their head everyday. The majority of these thoughts, however are usually negative and do not contribute to your well being and success. While exercise trains the body for maximum performance, the practice of meditation allows you to train your mind to be at peace. 
Happiness and bliss do not exist in the physical world, but can only be felt in the inner world. If you can achieve a peaceful mind, you are able to feel genuine happiness and free yourself from all emotional distress.   


The regular practice of meditation can help train your mind to be at peace in the most dreadful times in your life. 
Everyone has heard that children’s minds are like sponges. On the contrary, everyone’s minds are like sponges. When things seem to be  going well in our lives, we are overall content and happy. When external circumstances get in the way of what we want, we feel disappointed and unsatisfied. For example, a child picking out a lollipop in a candy store is looking forward to tasting the sour apple on her tongue, but after she eats it only wants another one.
It seems impossible to control our very busy mind because of the major changes in our mood. Everyone has an idea of what meditation is, but why bother? There aren’t enough hours in a day as it is. Where do you find that extra ten or fifteen minutes? If you have enough time to like pictures on IG, you have enough time to meditate. In the present day, stress and anxiety are at high levels. Meditation helps to free you of worry and allow you to experience true inner calmness. Improved concentration and communication, a sense of healing and energy and relaxation are among numerous benefits of meditation.  You can enrich your life with the regular practice of meditation. 
Meditation doesn’t have an end goal, but produces powerful results including mental and physical wellness. The practice of meditation increases happiness and improves your well being. But on a deeper level, it’s about getting to know your own mind. 

 

How do you meditate?


It’s important as a beginner to start with 2-5 minute sessions. At first, it will be difficult to sit still with an empty mind for a long period of time. You can gradually increase the number of minutes and even practice meditation multiple times a day. Remember to use this time to forget your worries and stress. You can practice by focusing on your breath, or repeating a word or mantra. How you go about it, doesn’t really matter. It simply involves turning your attention away from your thoughts and be present. Understand that there are no set rules for meditation. You may choose to close your eyes or keep them open. You might prefer lying down instead of sitting. Meditate however you feel is the right way. Besides, this practice is suppose to help you connect and work with your inner mind. If your thoughts begin to arise, simply imagine them as balloons floating through the sky. You see it and now it’s gone. You shouldn’t obsess over whether or not your mind is free from thought. It’s completely natural for the human mind to not shut off. 

Meditation is all about the mind and body connection. Whichever position you choose to be in, remember if you’re body is balanced, your mind will also be balanced. Notice your breath without trying to control it. You can meditate in the dark or light your favorite candles. The location where you decided to meditate should make you feel comfortable and further ease you into a relaxed state of mind. Relax all the muscles in your body, including your face. Try meditating with a gentle smile to remind yourself to be happy.

I’m sure you have all heard the amazing detoxing waters, teas and diets that claim to help you lose weight or cleanse your body of these toxins. Since you purchased your yoga mat, you’ve sweated, laughed and maybe even cried a little. Besides sweat, dust and dirt also collect on your yoga mat. Now it’s time to clean off your hard work. I’ve been asked and asked this question myself. How do you clean a yoga mat? The answer is simple. Here are a few options you can do at home to make your mat good as new. 

 

  1. Place your yoga mat in the bathtub and run the water over it. Let it soak and use a mild detergent and sponge or rag to wipe down your mat. Rinse and allow up to 24 hours for your mat to completely air dry. 
     
  2. Fill a bottle with half water and half white vinegar. You can also add a few drops of tea tree oil for added anti-bacterial properties. Spray your yoga mat with this mixture and wipe down with a wash cloth. 
     
  3. You can also order cleaning supplies specific to your yoga mat at any local studio or online. Make sure you read the manual that came with your yoga mat. They might include instructions on how to clean your mat.
